Introduction to Christian Mentoring

Course Tutors

The course will be led by

Sharon Prior – Sharon has worked in leadership roles within the NHS, Crusaders and Scripture Union. More recently she has been a Church Leader in several Baptist churches and Senior Tutor at Moorlands College. She now works as the Director of PACE a Christian Schools work Project in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. She is also the Chair of Trustees of Urban Saints. She has been involved in mentoring people for leadership over many years in all her roles and has taught this course for the past 10 years.

Colin Bennett  – Colin has worked in various training roles over the years and was Vice-principal of Moorlands College for over 20 years. He is very involved in his local church and is a Trustee of the Waterlily Project. He has been involved in mentoring people who are vulnerable, as well as those training for leadership.

The Aims of the Course

The aim of this course is to give an understanding of Christian mentoring and how it can be used in a variety of different settings.

There are two elements to the course, classroom learning and a short assignment.

The Syllabus

The syllabus for the course will be taught by experienced  practitioners who are involved in mentoring as part of their work and will include:

  • Definitions and reflection on Teams
  • Biblical basis of mentoring
  • Using the bible and prayer in mentoring
  • The organisation of the Mentor
  • Key Stages in Mentoring
  • Key skills in mentoring
  • Using the arts in mentoring
  • Action planning
  • Questioning skills
  • Spirituality of the Mentor
  • Self-reflection

Details of the Course

The teaching part of the course is delivered over one week, Monday – Friday. It will start at 11am on Monday and conclude at 1pm on Friday. Teaching will be from 9am-4pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Following the teaching week there will be a short assignment to be completed by participants if they wish to have the endorsement of OCNWMR (Open College Network West Midlands Region). Participants not wishing to gain the endorsed qualification can just attend the teaching week (no assignment) and receive a Certificate of Attendance from Discipling the Nations. There is an expectation that all students will fulfil all aspects of the course they sign up for. 

Refreshments will be provided each day and a light lunch will be provided from Monday – Thursday, so please let us know if you have any dietary requirements. Participants will need to organise their own accommodation, breakfast and evening meal.


All fees must be paid before the course begins.

  • OCNWMR endorsed course costs £350.00 per participant
  • Non-endorsed course costs £250.00 per participant

Course Notes

These will be provided electronically before the teaching week, so participants can print them off if required.

Disability Support

If any student has a disabilitythat could affect their studies on the teaching week, they should inform the Course Tutor during the application process.  Every effort is made to offer support for students with any additional requirements, but failure to disclose at application may mean the student’s needs might not be met. 

Attendance and Absence

  • Students are required to attend all the lectures and are expected to do so punctually.
  • A student unable to comply with this requirement, through illness or exceptional circumstance, must seek permission from the Course Tutor.
  • Participants attending less than 80% of the course due to illness or other reasons, will not be able to obtain any certification for the course.

Terms and Conditions

  1. Participants should apply using the online Application Form. Once this is received a reference will be taken up and if all is satisfactory, then an email will be sent to the participant offering them a place on the course.
  2. Full payment is due once the participant receives this email offering them a place on the course. The participant will have one week to make full payment, otherwise there will be no guarantee the place will be kept open for them.
  3. Once full payment has been made this is non-refundable, so if the participant is not able to attend they will not get a refund of the money.
