Is Continuing Professional Development (CPD) a Biblical Concept?
At first glance, CPD might sound like a secular framework—something borrowed from corporate training or professional accreditation. But when we look closely at Scripture, we find that the heart of CPD is deeply biblical. The call to grow, to reflect, to refine our ministry, and to serve with integrity is woven throughout the life of the early Church and especially in the example of the Apostle Paul.
Paul never stopped learning. He never assumed he had arrived. Instead, he pressed on—spiritually, theologically, and pastorally. He wrote, “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (Philippians 3:12). His ministry was marked by continual development: studying Scripture, engaging with diverse communities, mentoring others, and reflecting on his own journey with humility and courage.
CPD, then, is not a modern invention—it is a faithful response to the biblical invitation to grow in grace, wisdom, and effectiveness. It is about stewarding the call, sharpening the gift, and serving the Church with renewed clarity and conviction.
In this edition of the DtN newsletter, we explore how CPD reflects the life and legacy of Paul, and how it can shape our own journey as ministers and chaplains today.
Continuing in the Call: CPD and the Life of Paul
A Life of Integrity and Pursuit
“Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, ‘My brothers, I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience to this day.'” — Acts 23:1
“In the past, he let all nations go their own way.” — Acts 14:16
“I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” — Philippians 3:12
Paul’s ministry was marked by both integrity and pursuit. He lived with a clear conscience before God and man, yet never settled—always pressing forward into the fullness of his calling. This dual posture of faithfulness and hunger is the heartbeat of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
CPD is not just about acquiring skills or fulfilling requirements. It is about pressing on—deepening our understanding, refining our practice, and responding afresh to the call of Christ.
Paul’s CPD Journey: A Model for Today
Though Paul’s context differed from ours, his life offers a compelling framework for lifelong ministerial growth. Each aspect of CPD finds a mirror in his journey:
Theological Depth
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” — 2 Timothy 2:15
Paul’s theology was forged in Scripture, suffering, and Spirit-led reflection. His letters show a dynamic engagement with God’s Word, shaped by context and revelation.
Pastoral Communication
“Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.” — Ephesians 6:19
Paul’s ability to communicate across cultures and crises was rooted in prayer and clarity. CPD helps us refine our voice for today’s diverse ministry settings.
Reflective Practice
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed… struck down, but not destroyed.” — 2 Corinthians 4:8–9
Paul’s reflections on suffering and resilience show a deep awareness of God’s presence in process. CPD invites us to pause, reflect, and grow through experience.
Accountability and Conscience
“So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.” — Acts 24:16
Paul’s ethical compass was shaped by his accountability to God and the community. CPD strengthens our vocational integrity and ethical discernment.
Lifelong Pursuit
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:14
Paul’s journey was never static. He pressed on—not out of ambition, but out of response to grace. CPD helps us do the same: to take hold of that for which Christ took hold of us.
CPD Today: Continuing in the Spirit of Paul
Our CPD programme is designed to echo Paul’s posture of growth and grace. Each element is rooted in Scripture and shaped for today’s ministry:

Concluding thought
Paul’s life reminds us that growth is not optional—it is essential. CPD is our way of saying yes to the ongoing work of grace, the refining of our call, and the discipling of the nations.
- “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 11:1
- “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” — Philippians 3:12
Blessings as you continue in the call.
